  • Students will be able to determine whether an object will sink or float by comparing its density to the density of water.

Do Now-Get out your science notebook and open to page 66; Get out the following handouts: “Explain It With Atoms & Molecules Question 4” & “Take It Further Questions 5-8;” Tape the following handouts to the corresponding pages:”Explain It With Atoms & Molecules Question 4″ to page 66 and “Take It Further Questions 5-8” as flip page to page 66.

  3. Advance OrganizerThe real story behind Archimedes’ Eurkeka! TED Ed video
  4. Period 2– Demonstration –Sinking & Floating Solids- Why does a heavier candle float and a lighter piece of clay sink?
  5. Review Application– “Take It Further” Questions 5-8
  6. Understanding Connections- Write an Understanding Connections statement on the sinking or floating of solids on a Post-It note and stick it to the Understanding Connections pages p.60-61 of your science notebook.
  7. Practice- Density Workbook
