Learning Activities:

  1. Do Now– Copy down today’s homework assignment in your planner. Get out your signed Lab Safety Contract. Get out your science notebook and add to the Table of Contents- “Designer Plane p.19” (Right Side). Head page 19 properly with “Designer Plane-Investigation-9/23/16.”
  2. Check HW– p.14 Lab Safety Ad
  3. Science FridayThe Agony and Ecstasy of Capsaicin
  4. Lab Report Evaluation– Work as a group to review the Sample Lab Report on page 17, complete the Rubric, & answer the questions on page 16. Share what your group discovered. As one group presents, the rest of the class should ask questions, challenge the group’s results, or offer alternative interpretations of the lab report. Does each group concur (agree) or refute (disagree) with the evaluation of the lab report? Our big question is- what does a good lab report look like?

Thursday, 9/22/16- A Day

Learning Activities:

  1. Do Now– Copy down today’s homework assignment in your planner. Get out your signed safety contracts. Get out your science notebook and add to the Table of Contents- “Paper Airplane p.16” (Left Side) and “Paper Airplane p.17” (Right Side). Head page 16 properly with “Paper Airplane-Evaluation-9/22/16 and page 17 properly with “Paper Airplane-Sample Lab Report-9/22/16.”
  2. Science Lab Safety Quiz- After the quiz, work silently on the drawing of you as a scientist on p. 5/Lab Safety Ad on p.14
  3. Lab Report Evaluation– Introduce Design Problem & Focus Questions. Set up page 16 with Lab Report Evaluation Questions (Am I able to explain the meaning of the information on the lab report? Does it make sense? Can I repeat what the team who did the experiment has done? Do I agree with the conclusions? Why or why not?). Trim and tape sample lab report to page 17. Work as a group to review the Sample Lab Report on page 17 as scientists and engineers would. Complete the Rubric. Work together to answer the questions on page 16.

Wednesday, 9/21/16- B Day

Learning Activities:

  1. Do Now-Copy down today’s homework assignment in your planner; Get out your science notebook and open to page 14; Solve the word picture puzzle.
  2. Safety Contract- Complete the Lab Safety Contract form and take it home to be signed.
  3. Lab Safety Ad– On p.14 in your interactive science notebook, create an ad with visuals and words, for one safety rule.

Tuesday, 9/20/16- A Day

Mrs. Verrastro, the Guidance Counselor for Team Comets, will be in science class today with me. We will be starting to help you plan your future in high school! I hope there will be lots of science, math, and engineering in that future!  🙂

Learning Activities:

  1. Do Now-Copy down today’s homework assignment in your planner; Get out your science notebook and add to the Table of Contents-“Lab Safety Ad p.14” (Left Side) and “Lab Safety Challenge p.15” (Right Side); Head page 14 properly with “Lab Safety Ad-Diagram-9/19/16” and head page 15 properly with “Lab Safety Challenge-Educational Video-9/19/16.”
  2. Take the Laboratory Safety Challenge– Watch the Flynn Scientific Safety Challenge video. On p.15 in your interactive science notebook, make a list of what NOT to do in a science lab.
  3. Science Lab Safety Regulations/Safety Contract– Safety is my number one concern and I am very serious about it. Go over the safety rules. Point out safety equipment & emergency shut-off in classroom. Tape safety regulations to inside of back cover of science notebook.
