Core Ideas:

  • Gases and liquids are made of molecules or inert atoms that are moving about relative to each other.
  • In a liquid, the molecules are constantly in contact with others; in a gas, they are widely spaced except when they happen to collide. In a solid, atoms are closely spaced and may vibrate in position but do not change relative locations.

Remember: As long as you act like a scientist when we do science, you will be treated like a scientist and conduct investigations. If not, you get to watch the rest of us do science.


Periods 2, 4, & 6 Learning Activities:

  1. Do Now– Copy down today’s homework assignment in your planner. Get out your science notebook and open your notebook to page 35.
  2. Investigation- Molecules in Gas- How do heating and cooling affect a gas? Read procedure and model steps. Review Science Safety Regulations and complete Lab Safety Checklist- Before You Begin. Review Table Group Member Responsibilities. Begin Lab! Record observations by sketching on bottom of handout. Complete Lab Questions 4 & 5 and Lab Safety Checklist– After Lab is Completed. Tape Activity handout as flip page to p.35.

Periods 3 & 7 Learning Activities:

  1. Do Now– Copy down today’s homework assignment in your planner. Get out your science notebook and add to your Table of Contents- “Molecules in Gas-p.34” (Left Side). Open your notebook to page 34 and head it properly with “Molecules in Gas-Model & Conclusions-12/1/16.” Complete the Lab Safety Checklist questions #1-5 under After Lab is Completed.
  2. Review HW– Questions 4 & 5. Tape the Activity handout as a flip page to page 35.
  3. Animation– Particles of a Gas- What did you notice about the molecules of a gas: Do the molecules of a gas have strong or weak attractions? Are the molecules of a gas randomly or orderly arranged? When the molecules of a gas hit each other, do they normally stick together or bounce off?
  4. Model & Conclusion- On page 34 of your science notebook, draw a model of the air molecules in the bottle when it is placed in hot and cold water based on your observations of bubble on top of the bottle. Make a conclusion about whether heating or cooling affects the molecules in a gas and use your observations as support. Observe animation of heating and cooling gas in a bottle to adjust your model & conclusions.
