Thursday, 1/26/16- A Day

Core Ideas:

  • Substances are made from different types of atoms, which combine with one another in various ways. Atoms form molecules that range in size from two to thousands of atoms.
  • Each pure substance has characteristic physical properties (for any bulk quantity under given conditions) that can be used to identify it.

Learning Activities:

  1. Do Now- Periods 4 & 7- Copy down today’s homework assignment in your planner. Get out your science notebook and add to the Table of Contents- Driving Question- p.52 (Left Side) and Driving Question- p.53 (Right Side). What do you see in this picture? Periods 2, 3, & 6- Copy down today’s homework assignment in your planner. Get out your science notebook and add to the Table of Contents- “Demo/Handout- p.54” (Left Side) and “Demo/Notes- p.55” (Right Side). Head page 54 properly with “Metal Cubes-Demo/Handout-1/26/17” and head page 55 properly with “Metal Cubes-Demo/Notes-1/26/17.”
  2. Demonstration- Metal Cubes- Do cubes of exactly the same size and shape have the same mass? Observe the masses of the copper and aluminum cubes. Discuss possible explanations for why one cube has a greater mass than the other. Demonstrate how to measure volume, mass, and density. Add key words mass, volume, and density to index.

If there is extra time:

Unit Cover Page-On p.51 in your interactive science notebook, create a cover page for the unit on Density

  • Write the title very large so that it is easy to read.
  • Draw a minimum of 3 pictures that represents the unit.
  • Color the entire page, corner to corner, using colored pencil or crayons- no white paper showing

Self Reflection for Unit on Matter- Solids, Liquids, Gases & Changes in State- Use the “Self Reflection for Matter: Solids, Liquids, Gases & Changes of State” Google Doc in Google classroom to type your responses to the questions in the light gray boxes.
