Thursday, 9/28/17- A Day

Learning Tasks:

  1. Do Now– Copy down today’s homework assignment in your planner. Get out your science notebook and add to the Table of Contents- “Lab Safety Challenge” p.13 (Right Side). Head p.13 properly with “Lab safety Challenge-9/28/17
  2. Consensus Discussion (Circle)– Come to a class consensus as to what strategies/characteristics we expect in a scientists’ notebook and therefore in our notebooks
  3. Take the Laboratory Safety Challenge– Watch the Flynn Scientific Safety Challenge video. On p.13 in your interactive science notebook, make a list of what NOT to do in a science lab.

Learning Tasks:

  1. Do Now– Copy down today’s homework assignment in your planner. Get out your Interactive Science Notebook and open it to page 10.Solve the following word picture puzzle: M CE  M CE  M CE
  2. Review HW– ISN p10.
  3. Productive Scientific Class Discussion/Norms for Accountable Talk (Circle)– Brainstorm how scientists find out what other scientists are working on or researching. How do you think scientists discuss? What kinds of words might they use? If two scientists disagree, but need to work together to reach a solution, how might their conversations sound? Develop a class list of norms for accountable talk. Everyone’s voice has value, so how can we make it comfortable so that all voices contribute?

Students will be able to:

  • Observe a variety of strategies that scientists use to document their thinking
  • Select strategies they’d like to incorporate into their own science notebook

Learning Tasks

  1. New Seats!
  2. Periods 4, 6, & 7- Focus Questions– Set up questions on ISN p.11. How do scientists use notebooks? (Write-Pair-Share). All classes- Strategies we expect to see in scientists’ notebooks for recording data & observations (Full Class Brainstorm).
  3. Gallery Walk– Review procedures and expectations for gallery walk. For each notebook sample, look for different strategies scientists use for recording data and observations. Notice similarities and differences between the notebook samples. Record your observations on ISN p.11.

  2. Periods 4, 6, & 7– Model how to add to Table of Contents. trim and tape to inside front cover of ISN. Model how to format page headings & write page heading on p.10. Give students the following prompts on page 10: What are you looking forward to most about your science notebook? What do you still wonder about your science notebook?
  3. Mindful Monday7 Days of Calm: Day 2 Returning to the Here and Now– Listen to the audio walk our way through the mindfulness practice. After the practice, we discuss- What did you notice?
  4. Focus Questions– Set up questions on ISN p.11. How do scientists use notebooks? (Write-Pair-Share). Strategies we expect to see in scientists’ notebooks for recording data & observations (Full Class Brainstorm).
