Tuesday, 2/20/18- B Day

All classes will meet in the library to continue work on the Changes in State HyperDoc.

You should be completing the yellow Explore Section and beginning the pink Explain section. In the yellow Explore Section, you have explored how heat energy transfers through conduction in the Heat, Temperature, & Conduction Lab and you have explored how particles in different states of matter respond to changes in heat energy and pressure in the States of Matter PhET Simulation. In the pink Explain section, we will start to use the resources (infographic, video, and reading) to learn about changes of state. Our learning goal is to be able to explain how heat energy changes affect particle motion, temperature, and state of matter.

Monday, 12/19/16- B Day

Core Ideas:

  • The changes of state that occur with variations in temperature or pressure can be described and predicted using models of matter
  • Heat refers to energy transferred due to temperature differences between two objects

Learning Activities:

  1. Do Now- Get out your science notebook and open to pages 38 and 39. We are half way through the 2nd marking period. Reflect on how you can become a better learner. Write down 2 things you can do to become a better learner.
  2. Advance OrganizerIntroducing Solids, Liquids, & Gases, Measuring Temperature, & and Temperature vs Heat Eureka! video segments
  3. Investigative Phenomenon- With your cooperative table group partners, revise the model that explains how the spoon gets hot in the liquid. Use what you learned from your observations of the investigation with washers and water of different temperatures and your model and conclusions of what is happening on the molecular level. Watch the molecular model animations of the Heated Spoon and Cooled Spoon.

Friday, 12/16/16- A Day- Progress Report Period Ends

Learning Activities:

  1. Do Now– Get out your science notebook and open to page 38. Solve the following riddle: “What do you get when you cross an automobile with a household animal?”
  2. Science Friday- Your Very Special Bacterial Cloud
  3. Period 4- Investigation- Heat, Temperature, Conduction- Why does the temperature of an object change when it is placed in hot water? Read procedure and model steps for Part 2. Begin Part 2 of Lab. Record data in Data Table. Complete Lab Safety Checklist– After Lab is Completed. Tape Activity handout as flip page to p.39.
  4. Model & Conclusion- (notebook page 38) Based on your observation of room temperature washers in hot water, draw a model of the atoms in the room temperature metal washers and the molecules in the hot water before and after being placed in hot water. Make a conclusion about why the temperature of an object changes when it is placed in hot water and use your temperature data of the room temperature metal washers and the hot water as evidence to support your conclusion. Add key vocabulary terms heat energy and conduction to Index.

Thursday, 12/15/16- B Day

Remember: As long as you act like a scientist when we do science, you will be treated like a scientist and conduct investigations. If not, you get to watch the rest of us do science.

Learning Activities:

  1. Do Now– Get out the lab handout for Heat, Temperature, and Conduction. Get out your science notebook and add to the Table of Contents- “Heat, Temperature, & Conduction p.38” (Left Side). Open to page 38 and head it properly with “Heat, Temperature, & Conduction-Model and Conclusion-12/14/16.”
  2. Investigation- Heat, Temperature, Conduction- Why does the temperature of an object change when it is placed in hot water? Period 4- Review Table Group Member Responsibilities. Begin Part 1 of Lab! Record temperatures in Data Table on handout and complete Lab Question 1. Periods 2, 3, 6, & 7- Read procedure and model steps for Part 2. Begin Part 2 of Lab. Record data in Data Table. Complete Lab Safety Checklist– After Lab is Completed. Tape Activity handout as flip page to p.39.

Wednesday, 12/14/16- A Day

  1. Do Now-Copy down today’s homework assignment in your planner. Get out your science notebook and open to page 39. Get out the Lab Activity handout and read the procedure for room temperature washers placed in hot water.
  2. Investigation- Heat, Temperature, Conduction- Why does the temperature of an object change when it is placed in hot water? Period 4- Read procedure and model steps. On page 39, determine a problem statement, hypothesis, and experimental variables for the key question. Review Science Safety Regulations and complete Lab Safety Checklist- Before You Begin. Periods 2, 3, 6, & 7- Review Table Group Member Responsibilities. Begin Part 1 of Lab! Record temperatures in Data Table on handout and complete Lab Question 1.
